Venice. Tallinn. Venice. Power of the Sea and Cultural Channels offers a historical overview of the formation of the city of Venice and its maritime dominance in the Mediterranean, while also illuminating the artistic and cultural ties between the two cities.

The book takes a closer look at the iconic Arsenale, a complex of former shipyards and armouries that has symbolised the enduring ‘marriage’ between Venice and the sea for centuries, while also outlining the broader history of the city of Venice. The tales of the city on water highlight parallels between Venice and Tallinn, revealing the artistic connections that bind Venice to Estonia through the works of Estonian artists. Special attention in the book is paid to today’s most renowned international art event – the Venice Biennale.

The friendship between the two cities – Tallinn and Venice – is symbolised by a gondola gifted to Tallinn, which now belongs to the Estonian Maritime Museum. The final part of the book focuses on the history of gondolas and introduces the museum’s gondola.
