Fat Margaret – from cannon tower to maritime museum

Fat Margaret – from cannon tower to maritime museum

The Great Coastal Gate and its imposing cannon tower standing between the city and the port was undoubtedly as memorable a sight in past centuries as it is today. It is one of the most striking complexes in Tallinn’s Old Town, and the Estonian Maritime Museum can take great satisfaction in the fact that its fortune was married to the tower’s architecture a few decades ago. The complex has witnessed the development of the city over more than 500 years, undergoing changes and modernization but still preserving its various historical layers. This process has required a responsible and careful approach, as Fat Margaret is far from indifferent to what people do to her or say about her. Her immensely thick limestone walls have up to this point bravely withstood the test of time.
