„Kalev-class submarines were built according to the special requirements of the Estonian Navy. They only served under the Estonian flag in the years 1937–1940, after which the Republic of Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union. The construction of custom-built submarines was not cheap, but Estonia’s top military leadership considered their acquisition essential. The Kalev-class submarines symbolized the will of the small nation to fight for its independence.“
